In addition to saving money on your electricity bill every month, a solar panel system also produces “Solar Renewable Energy Credits” (SRECs) for the energy that it produces. For every 1-megawatt of power that the system produces one SREC is formed.
The calculation for producing SRECs is:
1 SREC = 1,000 kWh of solar electricity = 1 MWh of solar electricity
10 kW solar capacity = ~12 SRECs per year
These SRECs can then be used similarly to stock. It is traded is the SREC Trade and runs very much like the stock market would. Prices for the SRECs vary daily and are influenced by supply and demand. These can be sold and therefore will produce more income from the system.
